HOW
TO MAKE A SEARCH
A search can be made in two different ways:
by lists or by terms.
To search by terms, you must fill
in at least one of the two search fields
present in the query mask and click on submit.
|
Ex.: |
Enter
the term "economy" in
the "TITLE" field
...a list of headings containing
the term "economy" will
appear. |
To search by lists, you must
enter the first letters of the term and
click on the List
button of the relevant field.
In this way you will access the lists of
headings present in the catalogue and
referring to:
|
Author/Organisation |
|
Title/s |
|

|
|
Descriptors |
|
Thesaurus |
|

|
|

This type of search will display a list
of headings, in alphabetical order,
referring to the search channel of your
choice.
Note:
the following special characters can't be
used as unique search parameter:

Logical
operators
Accepted Logical or Boolean Operators are:
AND, OR, NOT.
Note:
Boolean operators must be written in capital
letters.
|
|
AND
|
Selects
documents containing all terms
entered |
|
|
OR
|
Selects
documents containing at least one of
the two terms entered |
|
|
NOT
|
Excludes
all documents containing the
unwanted term preceded by this
operator |
When more terms are entered without
specifying the logical operator to be used,
then the AND logic operator will be
automatically used
|
Ex: |
if
you enter "Hemingway Ernest"
in the AUTHOR field |
...all titles linked to the author "Hemingway
Ernest" will be displayed.
Within every field, it is also
possible to combine the AND, OR,
NOT logical operators.
If, for instance, you keep the previous
value entered in the AUTHOR field and
you enter two other terms linked by the OR
operator in the TITLE field...
|
Ex: |
if
you enter "Hemingway Ernest"
in the AUTHOR field and |
|
|
if
you enter "sea" OR
"farewell" in the
TITLE field |
...all documents showing the term
"Hemingway Ernest" in the AUTHOR
field and showing the terms "sea"
or "farewell" in the TITLE field
will be displayed.
Note: Those
terms called "stop-words" and
including: articles, single letters, some
conjugations of the most common verbs,
prepositions combined and not combined
with the definite article, are not
important for the search.
back to
index
Wildcard
characters
Special characters
enable you to make a search through parts
of words or by apocopation.
These characters are:
|
|
? |
(question
mark) replacing a character. |
|
*
|
(asterisk)
replacing a number of characters. |
|
|
Ex: |
if
you enter te?t in the
title search field, the
search will look for document
containing test o text. |
|
Ex: |
if
you enter lin* in the
title search field, the search
will look for document
containing linear, linguistics,
linoleum,... |
Note:
- The character ? (question mark) can't be used
as first search parameter.
- The character * (asterisk) can be used only
after 3 search parameters.

Search
by adjacent words
You can make a search by adjacent words
by entering several search words with
quotation marks ("...").
Clicking on Submit, only documents
containing the words entered, in the same
order and adjacent one to the other, will
be displayed (without taking into account
the stop-list words).
|
Ex: If you enter in
the FREE SEARCH field the value "history
of art", using
quotation marks |
... only documents with a title "History
of art" will be displayed (but not
documents with the title "Art and
History" or "Universal history

author; if it is a cross-reference author,
the word See will appear..
|
Ex: |
if you select the List of

This search is made if you are
interested in documents referring to
several authors on the list.
It will be necessary to select each author
of interest - by checking off their names
- and click on View
documents.
When you select more than one author, all
documents referring to the selected
authors are displayed.
If you click on Insert
in the search, you can go back
to the search mask keeping the list of
selected authors in memory (they are
displayed between the headings and under
the term OR) and enter new terms
that will combine with the previous choice
made under AND.
In so doing, it will be possible to enter
new search parameters through the fields
displayed in the search mask and restrict
the search as in the example below:
|
Ex: |
if
you enter the term "art"
in the TITLE field and the term |
|
|
"Raimondi,
Evelina' OR 'Raimondi, Ezio' in
the AUTHOR field... |
...this search will display the list of
titles containing the term "art"
and having as author either "Raimondi,
Evelina" or "Raimondi,
Ezio".
Search by exact
author's heading
You should make this search if you know
the exact complete heading of an author
(family name and first name for people or
heading for organisations).
In this case, it is enough to fill in the
AUTHOR field with the exact name of the
author and click on "Search"
to get the list of titles linked to that
author.
|
Ex: if you enter
"Alighieri Dante" in the
AUTHOR field |
...a list of documents whose author is the
one you're searching for will be displayed.
Search by parts
of author's heading
Make this type of search if you do not
know the exact complete heading of the
author. In this case, you must fill in the
AUTHOR field with only one word and click
on "Submit".
The system will search all documents
linked to all authors whose names show the
word previously entered.
This type of search is particularly useful
to find organisations.

Search
by subject
Foreword
The subject is the topic dealt with in
the document.
Remember that not all documents have a
subject; for instance, novels and classics
usually do not have any.
You'd better make a search by subject if
you want to check which documents are
present in the catalogue under a specific
topic of interest.
Moreover, we remind you that not all
current words are accepted by this index,
that is made by a list of controlled terms.
Search by initial

To start up a search by initial part of
subject, enter the initial part of subject
and click on List.
The search will display a list of subjects
ordered starting from the closest
alphabetical subject to the string entered.
For each subject on the list, besides the
heading, the search will display the
number of documents linked to that subject
(in [] brackets) if it is an accepted
subject; if it is a cross-reference
subject, the word "See"".
The words "Also see" will
send you to accepted subjects.

Search
by classification
Foreword
By
"class" we mean the discipline
to which the document belongs. Thus, when
a document is enterered into a class, it
will belong to that class of knowledge. In
making a classification, you enter a
document in a class of knowledge. For
instance, the Dewey Decimal Classification
System divides knowledge into ten main
classes (from 0 to 9), with unlimited
possible additions, enlargements and
internal sub-divisions. This system is
often used as a basis to classify books
and, in the description, to detect the
topic of the book.
To make a search by classification
symbols, enter the initial part of the
symbol and click on List.
This search will display a list of symbols
in alphabetical order, starting from the
closest symbol to the one entered.
For each classification symbol, the search
will display the number of documents
linked to that symbol (in [] brackets) if
it is an accepted symbol; if it is a
cross-reference symbol, the word "See"
will appear..
The words "also see" will
send you to accepted symbols.
